AAAHHHH!

I have so much to blog but cant seem to find a spare minute.  Hang in there.  I will have OODLES of posts coming up.

Contest!

Facebook contest has begun!  May the person with the nicest friends win.   Become a FB Fan to enter.

Are you a “Fan”?

Become a fan of Darla Roze Photography on FB!  Follow this link!  I will be announcing a contest within the next few days and being a fan on FB will only help your chances of winning.  I havent decided all the rules yet but I have decided the prize.  A fall photoshoot with my freakin’ cute new (to me) vintage couch.   Here is a horrible snapshot to get you excited.  Watch for the contest rules early next week.   hehehe…

By the way, I am completley uncomfortable with asking people to be fans.  I would much rather it be a “slightly interested in what she is going to do next” page but they didnt give me that option.  (O:

Staying Relevant

Before I became a photographer, I used to scrapbook.  But only months after I would finish a scrapbook I would look back thru it and be so embarrassed at how it looked now.  Now that the latest and greatest had come out and everyone else’s scrapbooks looked so much more advanced than mine.  I was constantly disappointed that I had put so much time and money into a fad that changed so quickly.  Needless to say, I gave up on that little hobby.

But what I learned in that endeavor has carried over to my photography a bit.  Last week my work was featured on Utah Bride Blog and the creator and friend of mine gave me the biggest compliment.  She said “Her work is classic but yet stylish”.   For some reason I was shocked that someone interpreted my work exactly like I hoped it would be.

It is very important to me that my work stay classic.  Fads change but a good photograph can be relevant for ages.

On the flipside, it is very important to me that classic does not equal BORING.  I work very hard on this.  My mind is always churning.  Locations. Poses. Angles. Processing.  Keeping if fresh without blatantly copying others or sacrificing my vision.   Now is the time where I apologize for my early years of photography when my vision was not so clear.  I’m sorry for the selective coloring.  I’m sorry for the pigeon toed brides with their skirts up. If you are a photographer and you have been around for 5+ years, you know the pose I’m talking about (O:

ANYWAY, enough of my ramblings.

FEATURED!

One of my summer weddings has been chosen as a featured wedding on Utah Bride Blog.   Congrats Jiaye and Jessica.  Your wedding really was feature worthy.

Summer Plans

Last summer I spent three months sitting in my air conditioned house makin a baby.  This summer I refuse.  Here are a few of my plans if you want to get in on them.

  • June 8-13th  Mini portrait/family sessions.  Check out my new portrait pricing on my website.  I am now doing prints!    I am so excited.   For years I have only been giving the disc because it has been what people want but now I am going to try to give you what you dont know you want.  And let me just tell you,  you want NICE prints.   Wait until you see the difference between what my pro-lab prints vs. walmart.  They are going to BLOW YOU AWAY!!  But dont worry, you can still buy the disc too.
  • July 16-20  Ashland Kentucky here I come.  Now booking portrait shoots around the beautiful city of Ashland.  Nothing like new (several hundred year old) locations to inspire me.
  • First part of September Calgary Alberta.  Also doing sponsored photoshoots up there.  Final plans havent been made on whether we are doing studio or outdoor shoots there but possibly a mix of both.
  • Weddings:  Intermingled between these portrait trips are some of the most amazing weddings.  I just cant wait to see what these couples pull together.
  • October Cancun Mexico. Also more to come on that.  But that technically isnt summer anymore.

And because this is a photoblog, not a read Darla go on and on blog, I will post a pic of sweet Isabella.

A to the L to the B.U.M.S

Yes, I have been listening to a little too much Fergie!

So, I get asked all the time about albums and it’s totally understandable.  It wasnt long ago when a wedding album referred to a huge black album with one 5×4 mounted in the middle of a 10×10 mat.  Things are different now…and OH SO much more interesting.

“Check it out!” (Yes, Fergie again).

Vendor Spotlight: Studio Stems

Flowers go with bridal/wedding photos like ham goes with beans (Sorry for the horrible analogy.  It’s whats for dinner and the smell is intoxicating).  I am telling you brides out there,  FLOWERS are IMPORTANT!  Flowers bring color!  Texture!  Your pictures need Studio Stems.

I have never been disappointed by what Studio Stems has dreamed up.  SO CREATIVE!  Right now, Studio Stems is doing a creative freedom option that ANY bride would be crazy not to book.  I have a few offers of my own to compliment what SS is offering.

  •  I too want creative freedom and am willing to give a free sitting (disc not included) to ONE someone who meets these criteria. 1. Must book Studio Stems for a bouquet.  2. Must have an amazing and or different dress/accessories 3. Must be willing to trust crazy ol’ me when I tell you where I am taking you.
  • OR if you aren’t feeling so adventurous, book any wedding package (that includes bridals) with me and Studio Stems I am giving a custom designed bridal storybook album. ($400 value).

Email me for more details. darla@rozephotography.com

And because every post needs a pic, here are two of my favorite bouquets Studio Stems has done.

“Swish”

I woke up in the middle of the night with this word on my mind.  Not swoosh as in Nike.  SWISH!  Who remembers this just by the word?

My parents tell of the days when their teachers at school were allowed to snap their knuckles with rulers if they were misbehaving in class.   By the time I got to school those days were long gone thank goodness.  But there was an equally torturous, completely PC punishment. Swishing.  I learned about it on my first day of Kindergarten.  Mrs Johnson, the scary front secretary with huge cat eye glasses and stinky musk perfume came marching into Mrs Hansons classroom with a tray full of little cups of aqua colored liquid.  So, why did they call it swish instead of mouthwash? I have never heard that word used before or since but it’s the word that woke me up last night.

I wonder if they still do that?  I highly doubt it.  As a mother now, it seems like a great idea.  Someone else forcing my child to ”swish” instead of me.  But I have a huge suspicion it isn’t done anymore due to someone claiming it violates their human rights to have stinky breath if they so choose.  This country is going to hell in  a hand-basket I tell ya!

So, here is to swishing, Mrs Johnson, and really bad school pictures!

Pre-mature Case of Spring Fever…

And I know it’s premature because yesterday  we woke up to snow.  We went for a walk today even though it was only 45 degrees.  I just cant stay in anymore.   I’m even excited to spring clean.  I can’t wait to FLING the  windows open and smell the spring air and beat the rugs hanging over the clothes line in the backyard.  If I had a clothesline and rugs that is.   Spring makes me feelwomanly (teehee).  I want to snap greenbeans in a colander and make rice pudding. Hmmm…until then I will sit in my slightly dusty, slightly stinky pentup house and watch my kids climb the walls.  Cheers!
